Inhomogeneous Reptation of Polymers

چکیده
We study the motion of long polymers (eg DNA) in a gel under the influence of an external force acting locally on small segments of the polymer. In particular, we examine the dependence of the drift velocity on the position where the force acts and the length of the polymer. As an application, we discuss the possibility of gel magnetophoresis the size-separation of long polymers by the attachment of a magnetic bead at an arbitrary position along the length of the polymer. We show that there is a regime where the separation of such polymers with this ‘random-position beading’ is possible. PACS numbers: 82.45.+z, 05.40.+j, 36.20.Ey

Nonequilibrium tube length fluctuations of entangled polymers
We investigate the nonequilibrium tube length fluctuations during the relaxation of an initially stretched, entangled polymer chain. The time-dependent variance σ 2 of the tube length follows in the early-time regime a simple universal power law σ 2 = A √ t originating in the diffusive motion of the polymer segments. The amplitude A is calculated analytically both from standard reptation theory...
متن کاملDisentanglement and Reptation During Dissolution of Rubbery Polymers
The dissolution mechanism of rubbery polymers was analyzed by dividing the penetrant concentration field into three regimes that delineate three distinctly different transport processes. The solvent penetration into the rubbery polymer was assumed to be Fickian. The mode of mobility of the polymer chains was shown to undergo a change a t a critical penetrant concentration expressed as a change ...
متن کاملSimulations for Structural and Dynamic Properties of Dense Polymer Systems
Recent attempts to investigate the properties of dense and semidilute polymer systems are reviewed. Both molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) methods provide direct evidence for the reptation model and give a rather detailed picture of the motion of linear polymers at high density. Mapping the results onto various chemical polymers allow one to predict the time and length scale for the ...
متن کاملNonlinear Reptation in Molecular Based Hysteresis Models for Polymers
We extend the linear “stick-slip” models of Doi-Edwards and Johnson-Stacer to nonlinear tube reptation models. We then show that such models, when combined with probabilistic formulations allowing distributions of relaxation times, provide a good description of dynamic experiments with highly filled rubber in tensile deformations. A connection to other applications including dielectric polariza...
متن کاملSurfactant mobility in nanoporous glass films.
Polymer molecules when physically confined at nanometer length scales diffuse nonclassically and very differently depending on their molecular weight and the nature of the confinement. Long polymers that exhibit "snakelike" reptation based mobility in melts may diffuse faster in confined nanometer sized cylinders with pore diameter d approximately 15 nm, and short polymers subject to Rouse dyna...
